Few home investments in Pakistan have paid off like rooftop solar. High electricity tariffs and falling panel prices made it an easy decision for many families. But the rules on exporting power to the grid have been changing, and that changes how you should design a system.
What’s been happening with net metering
Under net metering, homeowners export surplus power to the grid and get credited for it. In March 2025, the federal government decided to cut the buyback rate for new net metering users to Rs10 per unit. In late 2025, NEPRA published draft regulations proposing a move to gross metering for new systems, with a buyback rate of around Rs11.30 per unit and shorter contracts, while existing users would keep their current agreements. Check NEPRA and your distribution company for the rules that apply on the day you apply.
What this means for sizing
When the price you get for exported power is much lower than the price you pay for imported power, it makes sense to use more of your solar power yourself rather than exporting it.
- Size the system to your daytime use, not just to the maximum the roof can hold.
- Run heavy loads such as AC, water pumps, washing machines and EV charging during sunny hours.
- Consider batteries to store daytime power for the evening peak.
Batteries
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are now common for homes. They cost more upfront than old lead acid batteries but last much longer. They also keep the lights on during load shedding.
Choosing an installer
- Check they’re registered with the Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) if you want net or gross metering.
- Ask for tier 1 panels, a reputable inverter brand and clear warranties.
- Make sure the structure is properly engineered for wind and the roof is waterproofed after installation.
- Get proper earthing and surge protection.
Maintenance
Dust and smog cut output significantly in Lahore and other cities. Clean panels regularly with water and a soft brush, preferably early morning.
