Buying a Laptop in Pakistan: New, Imported or Used? A Smart Buyer’s Guide

Official warranty, grey imports or a used business laptop. How to get a good deal in Hafeez Centre or online without getting burned.

From Hafeez Centre in Lahore to Saddar in Karachi and online stores, Pakistan has a huge laptop market. It’s also a market where the same model can be sold with a local warranty, as a grey import or as used stock, at very different prices. Knowing the difference saves money and headaches.

Local warranty

Laptops sold through official distributors come with a warranty honoured in Pakistan. They usually cost more, but repairs are easier and parts are available. For expensive machines like MacBooks or high end gaming laptops, that matters.

Imported without local warranty

Many shops sell laptops imported from the US, UAE or elsewhere. They can be cheaper or offer models not officially sold here. The catch: the international warranty may not be honoured locally, and some come with a shop warranty only. Ask exactly what’s covered and for how long, and get it in writing.

Used and refurbished

Used business laptops, such as older ThinkPad, Latitude or EliteBook models, can be excellent value for students. They’re built tough and easy to upgrade.

The testing checklist

  • Battery health: check the battery report on Windows or cycle count on a Mac.
  • Screen: look for dead pixels, bleeding and brightness.
  • Keyboard and trackpad: test every key.
  • Ports, WiFi, Bluetooth, webcam and speakers.
  • Storage health: use a tool like CrystalDiskInfo on Windows.
  • Serial number: check it on the manufacturer’s website for warranty status and model details.
  • For MacBooks: make sure Activation Lock and any management profile are removed.

Avoid these traps

  • Refurbished laptops sold as “new”.
  • Specs that don’t match the box. Check RAM, storage and GPU in system settings.
  • Pirated software preinstalled. Insist on a genuine OS.
  • Paying online to unknown sellers without buyer protection.

The bottom line

Pay more for local warranty on expensive machines. For budget buys, a well tested used business laptop is often the smartest choice.
