Open Weight vs Closed AI Models: What the Difference Means for You

Some AI labs publish their model weights, others keep them locked behind an API. The trade offs in cost, privacy, control and safety, explained.

The AI industry is split into two camps. Closed models such as OpenAI’s GPT series, Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini Pro models are available only through apps and APIs. Open weight models such as Meta’s Llama, Mistral’s open releases, DeepSeek and Alibaba’s Qwen let anyone download the trained model and run it themselves.

Open weight is not quite open source

An open weight release shares the trained parameters, so you can run and fine tune the model. It usually doesn’t include the training data or full training code, and licences vary. Some allow almost any use; others restrict large companies or certain applications. Always read the licence.

Why choose a closed model

  • Top performance: the frontier models are often closed, especially for complex reasoning and coding.
  • No infrastructure: pay per use, no GPUs to manage.
  • Built in safety and tools such as search, file handling and enterprise controls.

Why choose an open weight model

  • Privacy and control: data can stay on your own servers, which matters for banks, hospitals and governments.
  • Customisation: fine tune on your own data and domain.
  • Cost at scale: for high volume tasks, running a smaller open model can be cheaper.
  • No lock in: you can’t be cut off or forced onto a price rise.

The geopolitical angle

Chinese labs, including DeepSeek, Alibaba and Moonshot, have released strong open weight models, which has made open models central to the global AI race. Europe’s Mistral also publishes open models alongside commercial ones. US policy debates focus on whether releasing powerful weights helps innovation or creates security risks.

Which should you use?

For most individuals and small businesses, a closed model through an app or API is the simplest path. For developers building products with sensitive data or high volumes, open weight models deserve a serious look. Many companies use both.
