A MacBook on its own is a lovely laptop. Add the right accessories and it becomes a proper desk setup for coding, editing or study, without losing the ability to pick it up and leave. These are the add ons that make the biggest difference.
A USB C hub or dock
MacBooks have a limited set of ports. A good hub adds HDMI, USB A, an SD card reader and Ethernet. For a permanent desk, a Thunderbolt dock connects everything with one cable.
Check: whether your MacBook model supports one or more external displays. Base chips have historically supported fewer external screens than Pro and Max chips, so look up your exact model before buying a multi monitor dock.
A laptop stand
Working all day with your head bent over a laptop screen is hard on the neck. A stand raises the screen to eye level. Pair it with an external keyboard and mouse or trackpad for good posture.
An external display
More screen space is the biggest productivity upgrade you can buy. For sharp text on a Mac, look at higher resolution monitors, such as 4K at 27 inches. USB C monitors that charge the laptop over the same cable keep the desk tidy.
An external SSD
Apple charges a lot for extra internal storage. A fast external SSD over USB C or Thunderbolt is a much cheaper place for video projects, datasets and archives. It’s also handy for Time Machine backups.
Keyboard and mouse
Apple’s Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad fit the Mac perfectly. Many people prefer an ergonomic mouse or a mechanical keyboard. Try a few before you commit.
A spare charger
A compact GaN USB C charger in your bag means you never have to unplug the desk setup. Make sure its wattage is high enough for your MacBook model.
A sleeve or bag
A padded sleeve protects against scratches and the occasional bump. Simple, but worth it.
Backups
Not an accessory as such, but important. Use Time Machine to an external drive and keep important work in the cloud too. Drives fail, laptops get stolen, and backups are the only real fix.
