Old wireless chargers had one annoying flaw. Put your phone down slightly off centre and it wouldn’t charge, or it would charge slowly and get hot. Apple’s MagSafe solved that with a ring of magnets that snaps the phone into exactly the right spot. Qi2 takes the same idea and makes it an open standard.
What MagSafe is
MagSafe for iPhone is Apple’s system of magnets and charging coils built into iPhones since the iPhone 12. The magnets align the phone with the charger perfectly, and they also hold accessories such as wallets, car mounts, stands and battery packs.
What Qi2 is
Qi is the wireless charging standard managed by the Wireless Power Consortium. Qi2 adds a Magnetic Power Profile based on the approach Apple contributed, so any phone maker can build in the same magnetic alignment. Newer Qi2 versions support higher wireless charging speeds on supported phones.
Why magnets matter
- Better efficiency: perfect alignment wastes less energy as heat.
- Faster charging compared with basic Qi pads.
- Accessories: one standard for mounts, stands, wallets and power banks.
Compatibility in plain words
- Recent iPhones work with both MagSafe and Qi2 chargers.
- Many recent Android phones support Qi2, but some only support Qi2 charging when used with a magnetic case. Check your phone’s specifications.
- Older Qi chargers still work with all these phones, just without magnets and usually more slowly.
Buying tips
- Look for official MagSafe or Qi2 certification on the box, not just “magnetic”.
- Use the right power adapter. A wireless charger is only as fast as the adapter feeding it.
- For cars, a magnetic mount with charging is great, but avoid leaving the phone in direct summer sun on the dashboard. Heat slows charging and is bad for batteries.
- Magnetic power banks are convenient but less efficient than a cable. Use them for top ups, not full charges.
Is wireless charging bad for the battery?
Heat is the main enemy of lithium ion batteries. Good, certified magnetic chargers keep heat under control and modern phones manage charging carefully, so for most people the convenience is worth it.
