AI coding assistants have changed how software is written. Professional engineers now use them daily. For students, they’re a powerful tutor, but also a tempting shortcut that can leave gaps in your understanding.
Great ways to use AI as a student
- Explain unfamiliar code: paste a function and ask what each line does.
- Debug with understanding: ask why an error happens, not just for a fix.
- Generate practice problems on topics you’re weak in.
- Code review: ask for feedback on readability, edge cases and efficiency.
- Learn libraries: ask for small examples of pandas, PyTorch or SQL patterns.
Ways it can hurt you
- Copying full assignments means you won’t pass exams or technical interviews.
- AI can confidently produce wrong or insecure code.
- Over reliance makes it hard to debug when the tool isn’t available.
A good rule
Try first, ask second. Spend some honest time on a problem before asking AI. Then ask for hints or explanations rather than complete solutions. Type code yourself instead of pasting it.
Academic honesty
Universities have different policies on AI use. Some allow it with disclosure, others ban it for assessed work. Read your course rules, and when in doubt, ask your instructor.
Skills that still matter
Problem decomposition, reading documentation, testing, debugging and system design are more valuable than ever. AI makes good engineers faster. It doesn’t make anyone a good engineer by itself.
