Nothing kills creative energy like a laggy timeline. If you edit regularly, the right laptop pays for itself in saved hours. But video editing stresses hardware differently from gaming or coding, so the usual spec advice doesn’t always apply.
Hardware video decoding matters most
Modern chips have dedicated media engines that decode and encode formats such as H.264, HEVC and ProRes. When your editor can use them, playback is smooth even on thin laptops. Apple Silicon Macs are particularly strong here, and recent Intel, AMD and NVIDIA hardware also handles common codecs well. Check that your camera’s format is supported in hardware.
GPU
Effects, colour grading, noise reduction and AI tools in editors such as DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro lean on the GPU. A capable dedicated GPU or a Mac with a strong integrated GPU makes a noticeable difference.
RAM
16 GB handles 1080p and light 4K work. 32 GB is the comfortable target for regular 4K editing with effects. On Macs, memory can’t be upgraded later, so choose carefully.
Storage
Video eats space. A fast internal SSD of 1 TB or more is ideal, plus an external SSD for active projects and a larger hard drive or cloud for archives.
Screen
Look for good brightness and wide colour coverage, ideally sRGB at minimum and DCI P3 for HDR work. A colour accurate screen means your videos look the same on viewers’ phones as they did on your edit.
Cooling
Long exports push chips hard. Thin laptops can throttle and slow down. Read reviews that test sustained performance, not just short benchmarks, especially if you work in hot rooms.
Where to save
- Edit with proxy files on a mid range machine instead of buying the top model.
- Use an external monitor at your desk instead of paying for a bigger laptop.
- Buy storage externally rather than paying for huge internal SSD upgrades.
